Howdens kitchen with steel knock-through and island

Challenge
Clients in a 1930s semi wanted to combine their separate kitchen and dining room into one open-plan family kitchen with an island and bifold doors to the garden. Existing dividing wall was load-bearing, and the kitchen was on the cold north-east corner with no underfloor heating.
Solution
5.4m steel goalpost across the dividing wall, structural engineer drawings and Building Control sign-off. Howdens shaker kitchen in deep navy with quartz worktops, 3.2m island with breakfast overhang and integrated wine fridge. Quooker boiling tap, Neff slide-and-hide oven, induction hob with downdraft extractor in the island. Aluminium 3-panel bifolds replaced the existing French doors. New wet underfloor heating across the whole kitchen on engineered oak.
Outcome
Completed in 5 weeks against a 6-week programme. Family kept using a temporary kitchen in the dining room for the first 4 weeks. Total spend including structural work, kitchen, appliances, worktops, doors and underfloor heating: £42,800 + VAT.

Yes — we fit-only kitchens from any supplier. We'll review the spec sheet upfront so there are no surprises on day one.
Do you handle the worktop template?
Yes — we manage the template visit, sign off the design with you and book installation directly with the stone supplier.
Will my house be without a kitchen?
Usually 2–3 weeks. We help you set up a temporary kitchen in another room before strip-out begins.
Do you do replacements as well as full refits?
Yes — we'll happily swap doors, worktops or appliances as a smaller project.
